As the water hits me, I’m taken back to that fateful day in 1996 when I first met Frank at the Bureau before all of this happened. Cappelano was known for having guile, knowing what suspects were thinking and getting inside their heads. He was also known as being that guy you hated. Let's be honest, the Bureau and most investigative branches are full of the kind of assholes you couldn’t stand in high school. The ones with the great physique, high intelligence, and that magnetic personality. You look for any fault you can find so you can talk shit behind their backs, then they invite you to their high school party and even try to set you up with a girl you might have a shot with. Cappelano was one of those guys. He had the look, the suave nature, and the overall self-awareness that allowed him to read a room almost instantly.

It was this attitude that drew me and others to him. He came off as though he cared and didn’t care at the same time. It looks weird when you type it, read it, or say it, but when you meet someone who pulls it off, you know exactly what I’m talking about. He was our Fonzie, the coolest kid in town.

“Neil Baggio, I presume, judging by the way everyone is keeping away from you. I wanted to come over and introduce myself, Special Agent Frank Cappelano.”

“I know who you are, I think we all know who you are, Mr. Cappelano,” I said. “I’m a little surprised you know who I am.” I wasn’t just being modest—why would a senior special agent know who I am, a fresh recruit so green I might as well be the Jolly Green Giant?

“Now that we got that out of the way, I heard about how you’ve been crushing it lately, and I’m looking for some young, aggressive, talented agents to bring on my team. Are you interested in a once in a lifetime opportunity? Chances are your colleagues will despise you, as if they don’t already.”

“Will I get any more information on what the job entails? Or do I have to take the offer on faith, that a senior officer with a great track record is going to have my best interests at heart. Not just his own career, like most Bureau agents?” Any other recruit in my position would probably say “yes sir!” without a second thought. But despite the flattery of being noticed by one of the Bureau’s top dogs, I had no interest in agreeing to an assignment without knowing what exactly I was signing up for. Plus, I’m a pain in the ass by nature, but you already knew that.

“Fair enough. Tell ya what, let's go catch the Red Wings game tonight and grab a beer, get to know each other, and enjoy some of that rocking Detroit atmosphere.
